What's my Cannabis Edible dose?

What's my Cannabis Edible dose? picture

Disclaimer :

This is just a guide; it is each individual’s responsibility to utilise cannabis responsibly and to work out their dosage with our edibles. Remember, it’s not a race. The winner isn’t the one who gets so high, they get paranoid, or God forbid, drink while having cannabis. If you’re going to do this, remember the GREEN rule:  GRASS BEFORE GLASS!  Then you should be fine. At all times, though, use responsibly.

What’s my dose?

Facts matter, let’s face it, every Cannabis store out there tells you another story, if they tell you anything at all.

Whenever I’ve walked into our local Cannabis shops, I’m amazed at how disinterested or disengaged the staff are. They’re quite happy to let you wander around, hoping you know what you want.

Most don’t know the product’s effects, especially with edibles, as they’ve probably never tried edibles before, and in our experience, most don’t know their tolerance.

Edibles metabolise differently in the body compared to smoking. There is no burn-off and evaporation in an edible, like there is with a joint or bong. It goes straight into your bloodstream and gut, not your lungs and head and can take up to 45 minutes to 2 hours before effects are felt.

This is where the advice is of PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE!  Start LOW and go SLOW!

Wait, patience is key. You can always have more, you can’t have less, after the fact. Cannabis Edibles take 6 to 8 hours to ‘wear off’, too much can lead to nausea, due to the lightheaded effect, paranoia, especially if you’re prone to this disposition.

We’ve also determined that if initially the effects take longer to manifest, it could be due to a sluggish gut or liver, and the cannabis is doing repairs. Continual or regular use will rectify this, and you may find that you start to feel the effects sooner, in subsequent usage.

Considering the information just presented, the power to the knowledge for your own safety is imperative.

Did you know that it takes between 10g and 15g of cannabis to extract 1000mg, and that a joint is equivalent to approximately 50mg, after burn-off and evaporation.

This, as far as we can test, the good old-fashioned way, implies that a 5mg dose is equivalent to a drag of a normal, cigarette-sized joint, because not all joints are equal, nor is all cannabis.

So, WHO ARE STARTERS?

  • New to Cannabis; curious but never tried Cannabis before, scared, concerned, nervous because it’s the ‘gateway drug’ NO, hate to break it to you that’s sugar. It’s addictive – NO, that’s alcohol, cocaine. Heroine, Meth.  A starter dose would be 5mg or 6.25mg. Remember, you can buy a 10mg and cut it in half to test- wait and be patient.
  • Never smoked or had edibles before; try a sample portion 2.6mg in total, see how you feel, observe, this gives us a good starting point. If you feel this and like it, you’ll understand it’s not so scary, it can help take the edge off, make things feel a bit lighter and energise you. This is referred to as a  MICRODOSE.
  • Tried it years ago but haven't since; If you have had a bad experience, and are therefore hesitant, I pose two questions.
    • How many times have you been drunk?
    • Have you ever had another drink since?

Chances are, you said yes to both questions. My response to this is, one bad experience with cannabis, you never touch it again. One bad experience with alcohol, you do at least once a month.

No judgment, but don’t let one bad experience ruin the one pastime that heals while you laugh, helps you to relax, sleep, and go through your day with less stress, with the only downside being the munchies, be denied to you.

  • A few times a year indulger. Each time you stop using cannabis regularly, your body resets, and your tolerance level goes back to the beginning as if you’ve never had cannabis before. – WE would recommend you take a 10mg to 12.5mg, but start off by cutting this into quarters or halves, test first always.

You can liken the effects of a standard tolerance STARTER portion of 5mg to a drag, and to the effects of your 1st glass of wine.

If you’re sensitive to medication, or if a Grandpa or Panado puts you to sleep or makes you shake, start off with 1.25mg mini cookie micro dose, 30 per bag.

Likewise, if you’re new to cannabis, but take heavy medication (for sleep or pain) and your tolerance is generally high i.e., you can handle a bottle of wine, we’d suggest the ‘UPPER STARTER’ range in lime green, which is 10mg and 12.5mg. (2 to 3 drags)

So WHO ARE SEASONED?

Not new to Cannabis; you use cannabis socially, or to relax, you’ve indulged in edibles, and you’ve probably smoked a joint throughout the day or week and share it when you do. Here we would suggest 20mg, 25mg and 30mg strengths.

Indulge once or twice a week, usually on the weekend, instead of alcohol when you’re out with friends.

Smoke 1/2 a joint to a joint a day; start off with half of a 25mg, which is equivalent to 3 drags- remember you can always have more.

Smoke on occasion, new to edibles; start off with half of the 25mg, which is 12.5 mg and wait and see the effect. This is just to gauge how you metabolise edibles, remember it's different to smoking.

So WHO ARE STONERS?

Regular/daily use of Cannabis; you smoke regularly, not quite a chain smoker, but throughout the day, a couple of joints

4 to 12 + joints/day; you have access to your own grow, or a friend's, or you get real cheap weed,d and you’re not actually a stoner. If you are closer to the 12 joints a day, we would suggest a tolerance break. You would be amazed at what slowly take less to eventually stop for just 2 weeks.   Edibles are way better for your lungs than smoking; you’ll be able to breathe not only for air but also because it will take a lot less to get high.

High tolerance. You may be ‘new to cannabis, but still have a high tolerance, either because you have a system that is used to heavy medication or drinking, this doesn’t mean anything other than what your body’s optimal requirement may be. The high tolerance could be because of toxins or damage that needs to be expelled or healed. Cannabis will do this naturally

In conclusion, once you have determined the correct dosage for yourself, you can start experimenting with the tolerance levels that you can alter for various outcomes. By way of example, 5mg works for you, to make you calm and relaxed, but still functioning without laughing like a hyena, so you could take this to keep the edge off during the day.

You may find that 10mg makes you get the munchies, and laugh like a hyena and not give any fucks, whereas 25mg makes you sleep like you’re dead.

Once you know, the power is in your hands. Knowing the starting point and a little math, along with the fact that our measurements are consistent, you can buy higher doses, cut them up and apportion them accordingly: By way of example, a 100mg gummy, cookie or brownie cut into halves is 50mg, quarters 25mg,  and eighths 12.5mg.

As long as it’s kept in the cellophane bags and sealed in an airtight container, in the fridge or freezer, the product will last.
